Get Fit Fridays - Week 2

Ok... I know, I know. I skipped a week. But in my defense, it took me two weeks to get through the book. I'm not sure I agree with everything (grain is a poison to humans?), but a lot of the other topics addressed in the book make sense. The fact of the matter is that processed foods mimic natural compounds, but they don't function the same.

Also, I really had trouble giving up the baked goods brought to work for team breakfast and the Halloween candy sitting around the office. Hopefully I'll be a little better this week. I'm already noticing a difference in the way my clothes fit and I can't wait for them to be even looser!

Current weight to lose: 17.8% of Bodyweight

Goals for the week: Record 10 primal recipes and/or adjustments to family recipes. Make 3 of these recipes and save enough to freeze for future meals.

Motivation: (updated)
% to lose     -     Reward
       17%     -     Pedicure
       14%     -     Hair Cut
       11%     -     Nails
         7%     -     New make up
         4%     -     Massage
         0%     -     Shopping Spree

What are the challenges that you have been facing when it comes to your goals? How are you overcoming them?

Get Fit Fridays - Week 1

I know I'm not the only one, but I have some goals to be healthier, and one of those goals is to eat more nutritious foods. And if I happen to lose some weight, then so be it ...Really though, who am I kidding? Losing the weight is what motivates me.

So here's the plan.... I am going to post weekly about my weight-loss/get healthy goals and progress. Why? Because I need someone to be accountable to, and because I would love to hear your stories!Pleae feel free to join me in this get healthy adventure. Just send me a comment/e-mail/etc. and I will be happy to post your progress or a link to your blog post too. And thus begins:

Overall Goal:
Lose 20% of body weight (I will not be posting my weight on here)

Motivation:
% to lose     -     Reward
       17%     -     Hair cut
       14%     -     Nails
       11%     -     Massage
         7%     -     New make up
         4%     -     Pedicure
         0%     -     Shopping Spree

Goal for this week: Read the Primal Blueprint. I am hoping that it will encourage me to adopt a lifestyle change based around health. This is the basis of my husband's change in health, and he has made incredible progress so far. I'm proud of him, and I'm hoping that the principles I learn will help me too.

Here's how I'll structure it: Week 1 - Make and Post goals. Weeks 2 through ? - Start recording progress against those goas, as well as a health-related challenge and accomplishment for that week, related insights, and recipes that fit in with my new Primal lifestyle.

So, what are your health-related goals and how do you plan to accomplish them?

Spanish Reading List

One of my goals for the week has been to go through the storage closet on our porch so that we can add a freezer chest (yay for getting better values on meats)! I pulled out a box of Spanish books that I thought were worth keeping. Well, since we don't have infinite storage for books that I don't have time to read , I'm consolidating my hard copy literature into a reading list:

-Marianela por Benito Perez Galdós
-La Vida as Sueño por Calderón de la Barca
-Fuente Ovejuna por Lope De Vega
-El Tragaluz por Antonio Buero Vallejo
-El sueño De Venecia por Paloma Díaz-Mas

Miguel de Unamuno (I took a whole class on this guy)
- Del sentimiento trágico De LA Vida
-Amor y pedagogía
-La agonía Del cristianismo
-Antología poética
-Niebla (can't wait to read it. Just downloaded the ebook)
-En Torino all caticismo

I'm pretty much just keeping one grammar book and my phonetics (my favorite subject) stuff!

The Garage

A few weeks ago they changed our drawers at work. I packed up all of my papers, highlighters, and lotions;filed everything; and threw away the junk. I think it inspired me, because this past weekend we decided to tackle the garage.
Scattered life jackets with CO2 inserts

It had been a mishmashed pile of decorations, papers, and sailing gear. Between wind storms that knocked bins over, laundry baskets full of random tid-bits that I threw together when I moved, and sailing gear that had been thrown apart as we frantically grabbed cleaning supplies, the garage was a bit of a disaster. The breaking point was when we went into the garage to gather together the sailing stuff and take it to the lake. As I was walked out of the garage, I found a little visitor who had decided to come live in our space.

Our visitor - came to find out she had about 5 other friends too!

After we had our garage sprayed for spiders I decided it was the perfect time to get organized. I swept out all of the leaves (which I have been meaning to do since last fall), dust, and spiders. Branden brought in some shelves and I packed up our cabinet and moved everything into its spot. All that's left is to consolidate all of my craft supplies, go through one box of papers, and print out some matching labels so that everything has a more cohesive feel.

Can you spot: 1. Furniture to be moved into the house 2. Christmas decorations (including a tree and wreath) 3. Organized lifejackets and no other sailing gear (we eventually did get the box out to the boat) 4. The perfect space for a car!

Goodbye from Finn hanging out while I clean the garage

Finn

For my birthday in 2012, Branden took me to the ballet with my family. It was a blast going to see the Little Mermaid (one of my favorites as a kid). When the evening had calmed down and we got home, he handed me a small present. It was pretty obvious to me that it was jewelry. I was excited. When I opened it, I pulled out a small red collar. I mean, I guess it is like jewelry, just not something for me to wear. Branden told me that he was giving me a puppy, and that I needed to pick one out.

I searched and searched on KSL for days. And, by Friday, I found a cute little pup up in Idaho. He was 9 months old (so still cute, but potty-trained). We picked him up that weekend. He's a Maltese, though I suspect he may not be pure-bred. (No... that brown and grey fur up there isn't his, but he has very blond ears) In any case, he makes me smile every day and was the best birthday present that I have ever gotten.

Hello from the Skies

Right now, I'm on the smallest airplane that I have ever been on in my life. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't nervous.

This morning, my last in Nauvoo, I walked down the trail of hope, and listened to actors portray some of the saints who left Nauvoo to head west and settle Salt Lake City. It took them 6 long months. They endured such hardship, foregoing material possessions and facing the loss of loved ones. I'm not sure if I could make it through something like that...but I do know that my life has not prepared me for a trek on foot across thousands of miles.

We live in such comfort compared to those in 1846. We can communicate a the touch of a button. We have air conditioning. We have cars. We have cellphones. Upon my arrival in Nauvoo, I was shocked that I had no cellphone reception. I mean...if I left my phone on the top right corner of my pillow it would ring when someone called me, but if I picked it up, I lost the call.

I had to learn a new way if communication with my friends and family. If we were going out, we had to decide when and where to meet. If I needed to ask them something, I walked the 4 blocks to their hotel. It reminded me that once people communicated when they met in person. They said hi to strangers on the streets--wouldn't you if you weren't exactly sure when you would see or speak with your loved ones next? Families lived close together and gathered for important events.

In Nauvoo, people still strike up conversations when you walk into a room full of strangers. They acknowledge you--which is something that I hardly do. They wave when you're out walking and they drive by or vice versa.

This little piece of humanity was so refreshing. So often as I run about in my busy life, I pretend that the others around me aren't people at all but are simply fixtures like the elevator call button. When the elevator arrives we all step in, and unless you have met before, most people stare straight ahead avoiding eye contact in such a confined space. Of course this is worse in larger cities like New York where it generally permeate everywhere you go, but it's getting bad in places like church where people should be familiar with one another. I know that I'm so busy being self conscious, that I don't think about making someone else's day better. How can you if you don't talk to them? That's one thing I learned in Nauvoo.

When I was in upstate New York, I heard a woman speak about how she missed the sense of community she once had with her neighbors. I can't help but wonder if this is one of the effects of technology. Yes, we can communicate with our loved ones a world away, but we are becoming less present in our own lives and in our "interactions" with others.

This has come up over and over again for me this summer. In fact we had a discussion about it at work before I left for Nauvoo. And now, my summer is winding down as I head back to my busy life.

I stood at the end of Parley's Street on the east bank of the Mississippi river facing west this morning. What hope the pioneers had as they went to settle a land that would be their (and my) home. It's hard to believe that I will be engaging in the same journey...except mine will only take about 6 hours. I am thankful for our modern conveniences, but as I leave the city of Nauvoo, I hope to never forget the lessons I learned there.

"Flying"

These days it seems like I spend more time waiting for flights than I actually do in the air. In fact, I just heard a stat in the Atlanta airport that 1 in 5 flights in the US were delayed or cancelled last year. I guess its a good thing I don't have Finn with me right now.

Branden and I are headed to visit his parents, and the truth of the matter is I am actually quite terrified. I LOVE his parents, don't get me wrong, but I'm horribly shy. So, I'm anxious to get there and get over my shyness.

Too bad we don't have something faster. I mean, we switched from trains to planes a while ago. I wonder if we'll ever get something like teleportation? In any case, the current status quo has got to end.

Had anyone else noticed this? I usually fly Delta because of their schedules (and the Amex Gold Delta Skymiles card), so I'm really curious if this is a problem mainly with Delta.

(We have gone from a 40 min layover to a 5 hour layover... So far)

P.S. I am thankful for airplanes do what would be a continuous 3 day trip can be a 12 hour trip even with layovers.
Keeping ourselves entertained on the plane.
